DataOps Automation for Regulated Reporting

9 months·Insurance carrier·Data & AI

Automated regulatory-reporting pipelines with lineage, testing, and evidence capture.

Key results

  • Reporting cycle time -62%
  • Manual reconciliation elimination
  • Audit finding 0

Context

An insurance carrier ran statutory reporting through a stack of spreadsheets, SAS scripts, and manual reconciliation workflows. Quarterly reporting cycles consumed the full actuarial and finance team for two weeks; audit findings on process documentation were recurring.

Challenge

Automating regulated reporting required every number to be reconstructable from source data through audit-reviewable lineage. The existing process's opaque reconciliations would not transfer into automation without refactoring.

Approach

Thoughtwave delivered a 9-month DataOps transformation: dbt-based transformation pipelines with built-in testing, end-to-end lineage captured automatically, evidence-capture workflow that ran alongside the reporting cycle, and deprecation of the spreadsheet and SAS remnants. The 9-month engagement covered discovery, platform build, migration of all in-scope reports, and two sequential quarterly cycles.

Outcomes

Reporting cycle time dropped 62%; manual reconciliation was eliminated from the in-scope reports; the following external audit returned zero process findings — first time in years.
